London born, now Ft. Greene based, singer/songwriter Kirsten Price played Crash Mansion last Saturday night. Kirsten's debut CD is due out in January of 2008 and a show at Joe's Pub in early February will follow.
Kirsten recently sold out Joe's Pub and she drew a strong crowd to the show at Crash Mansion. I hadn't seen Kirsten play live prior to this show and had only heard "Magic Tree" and a couple of her other songs so I didn't know quite what to expect.
I was really impressed with the show. I have seen too many new artists get flustered by a large crowd but Kirsten has a great stage presence. She really connected with the audience and seemlessly moved from guitar to keyboard.
One pleasant surprise about Kirsten's live show was that it was much closer to Prince than Fiona Apple. Kirsten has a solid blues voice but her voice, locked with a solid bass and drums groove, adds sort of a Prince-like sex-funk aura to the show.
I don't know Kirsten's material well enough to pull together a set list but she closed with "Crazy Sexy Beautiful" and the already dancing crowd ended up on the stage.
Kirsten's next show is opening for Sly & the Family Stone's shows at BB King's on December 7th.
