I've got a backlog of postings and CD reviews to finish and yet I spent too much time this evening trying to Photoshop Tim Kiely's head onto a mid-80's photo of Tom Keifer.

The Canon Logic have the lead-off track on the new Engine Room Recordings' Guilt By Association compilation. The theme of Vol. 3 is 80's hair metal and The Canon Logic deliver a rocking power-pop cover of Cinderella's hair-ballad "Don't Know What You've Got (Til Its Gone)".

Engine Room Recordings is back with another installment of the beloved covers compilation series with Guilt By Association Vol. 3, to be released on November 15, 2011. The Guilt By Association concept is easy, Engine Room asks artists to cover songs that one could call a guilty pleasure, but the catch is we all love these songs guilt free! Past volumes included tracks by Devendra Banhart, Will Oldham, Superchunk, My Brightest Diamond, Matt Pond PA, and Frightened Rabbit covering artists such as Mariah Carey, My Chemical Romance, Ace of Base and Destiny’s Child. On Guilt By Association Volume 3, Engine Room has gone one step further and added a theme within the theme. For this newest installment, all of the songs had to be plucked from everyone’s favorite genre, 80’s hair metal. Vol. 3 features Helmet covering Loudness, Mike Viola tackling Ratt, Madison Square Gardeners doing Poison, Canon Logic taking on Cinderella and Bird of Youth covering Skid Row.

Canon Logic will release "Rapid Empire" on August 30, 2011 via Engine Room Recordings. "Rapid Empire" is a five song EP driven by striking rhythms and an unrelenting energy. Themes of fear, solitude, risk, and perseverance are set against each other as a fractured narrative unfolds over dynamic soundscapes.

In the Spring of 2010, Canon Logic released their first full-length effort, FM Arcade, an eclectic album of powerfully catchy pop songs. Converse’s Talk Blog said "FM Arcade is rife with slick musical structures and beautiful, clear vocals.” Achieving a growing popularity in their native NYC, supporting acts like Oh Land and the Lemonheads, and headlining Bowery Ballroom, they broadened their reach up and down the East Coast on tour, and the songs stretched even further, landing placements on CSI:NY, internet ad campaigns, and on Hollister Co. and affiliated stores’ playlists, nationwide.

The band teamed up with NYC label Engine Room Recordings after recording a cover of “Don’t Know What You Got (Till It’s Gone)” for their popular Guilt By Association covers compilation series, which has featured artists in the past such as Devendra Banhart, Frightened Rabbit and Will Oldham; the band will be featured on GBA-Volume 3 due out in late 2011.

Canon Logic is comprised of guitarists Mark Alu and Josh Greenfield, bassist Sean Enright, drummer Zach Jordan, and frontman and principal songwriter Tim Kiely.

Canon Logic's next local show is September 8th at Music Hall of Williamsburg and they are playing with Pants Velour, Shoot the Freak and The Wicked Tomorrow. Tickets are $12 in advance and $15 DOS.

A Million Years Headline Two Nights @ Mercury Lounge on July 21st and July 22nd

Brooklyn indie-rockers A Million Years had a lot of people stop and take notice after releasing their debut CD, Mischief Maker, last summer. The disc was produced by Shannon Ferguson of Longwave and AbsolutePunk described it as the "lovechild of Interpol and As Tall as Lions". The band played a number of high-profile shows last year with artists that included 30 Seconds to Mars, Phoenix, The Drums and Jesse Malin and ended the year being voted #4 in Deli Magazine's "Best of 2010 NYC Emerging Artists" poll.

After selling out Mercury Lounge (in advance of the show) this past February, the band has been asked to headline two shows at the club on July 21st and July 22nd. For the show on July 21st, A Million Years are playing with Bellevue's Finest (set time 10:15PM) and Whale's Belly (set time 9:30PM). Tickets are $10 are doors are at 9PM. For the show on July 22nd, A Million Years are playing a late show with The Canon Logic (set time 10:30PM). Tickets for this show are also $10 and there is a two-day ticket for $16.

Canon Logic Play Southpaw on Thursday, May 28th with Ann Courtney and the Late Bloomers

This is my 'pick of the week' show.

The Canon Logic are playing at Southpaw on Thursday night with Ann Courtney & the Late Bloomers. The Canon Logic are fantastic live band and the crowds seem to grow in size each time that I've seen them play.

The Canon Logic are finalizing their debut full-length CD Dark Maid and the band will be playing tracks from this forthcoming release at the Southpaw show. For anyone who needs an early 'fix', the band posted their recent EP "The White Balloon" along with a handful of unreleased tracks as a free download.


Here is a live performance of "Avenue of Criminals" when the band was competing on MTV2's Rock Battle.


Tickets for the Southpaw show are $8.00 and the show starts at 8PM.

The Canon Logic - Live @ Sullivan Hall, NYC 10/3/08 + Post-Show Interview

The Canon Logic played to a full house last Friday night at Sullivan Hall and this video is from the band's opening number. I don't know the name of the song but the band has a number of new songs in their set which sound great. Check out the new song "Avenue of Criminals" which is streaming on the band's MySpace page (link below). I have been looking forward to new recorded material from the band and, in talking with the guys after the show, they are going to be releasing a new EP later this year and a full-length release sometime next year.

The crowd seems to grow in number every time that I see The Canon Logic. The band also has some of the most enthusiastic fans that I have seen in a long time as the crowd danced and sang along to all of the songs. The band played about a 45 minute set and, with the crowd alternating between cheers of "CA-NON LOGIC" and "ONE MORE SONG", the club let the band play one final tune. I think the crowd would have kept them on stage for the rest of the night if the club would have allowed it.

Canon Logic are playing the No Correct Way/Fearless Music showcase at CMJ which will be held at Arlene's Grocery on Tuesday, October 21st. The are some great bands on this bill which include Second Dan and The Dig.

The Canon Logic @ Arlene's Grocery, NYC 5-30-08

The Canon Logic held the release party for their new CD, The White Balloon, last night at Arlene's Grocery. The room was completely full (sold out??) and the band sounded great. The band's brand of power-pop was infectious and they kept the crowd dancing (...which is rare to see at a NYC show these days). Both the crowd and the band seemed to have a great, hot and sweaty time.



The Canon Logic's next show is at R-Bar on June 28th.
