Militia Vox (Judas Priestess) Plays Black Rock Coalition Show at Littlefield on Friday, Nov. 21st along with Members of The Roots, Fishbone and Earl Greyhound
Militia released an EP of covers last month, "Bait", that features reinterpretations of songs from artists that range from Ozzy and Nine Inch Nail to Tool and PJ Harvey. In a recent interview with Vents Magazine, Vox described "Bait" as "the 1st half of my concept project called “The Villainess.” Bait is my poison apple to the public, a way to entice and seduce listeners via songs and artists that they already know and love… As well being a form of flattery to the artists that I’ve covered and admire. I’ve been in original bands since 1997 and always had much more of a reaction doing covers, especially with Judas Priestess. So this is my way to warm up listeners to prepare for my next album (The Villainess) which is all originals. That’ll happen in 2015."
Militia Vox is playing the Black Rock Coalition showcase at Littlefield in Brooklyn on Friday, Nov. 21st. This show also includes The Dust Rays (Kirk Douglas, Mark Kelley and Ricc Sheridan) and Year of the Dragon (feat. Dirty Walt from Fishbone). Tickets are $12, doors are at 10:30PM and Vox takes the stage at 11PM.

Marissa Nadler & Faces on Film - Photos & Review from Littlefield, Brooklyn, NY 7-31-11
Faces on Film - Manitoba (Acoustic) by mikefiore333
Faces on Film (which is the musical alias of multi-instrumentalist Mike Fiore) opened the show for Marissa Nadler at Littlefield. I wasn't that familiar with Faces on Film's music prior to listening to Mike's acoustic set but his rich, emotive voice reminded me of Mark Kozelek (Red House Painters) or Ours' Jimmy Gnecco. One of the standout tracks from his set was "Manitoba" and a full-band version of this tracks has been added to the iTunes reissue of Faces on Film's second disc, Some Weather.
Marissa Nadler started her set by reaching into her back catalogue for the songs "Hyacinth" and "Salutations in the Dark" before coming coming back to the present with "Little King" (from the new self-titled disc). Marissa switched between a 6- and 12-string acoustic but it was her beautiful, haunting voice that was the focal point of each song.
Mike Fiore returned to the stage midway through Marissa's set to play guitar and add backing vocals which gave Marissa a chance to free herself from her guitar. Some of the standout tracks from the second-half of the set were "The Sun Always Reminds Me of You" and "In Your Lair, Bear" (both from the new self-titled disc) and a solo cover of Leonard Cohen's "Famous Blue Raincoat".

Marissa Nadler: Boston Dream-Folk Artist Kicks Off July Headlining Tour // Shows at Mercury Lounge and Littlefield
DOWNLOAD: Marissa Nadler - "The Sun Always Reminds Me of You"American gothic / dream-folk artist Marissa Nadler just released the follow-up to her well-received 2009 disc Little Hells and is playing a short run of headlining dates in support of the new release. This new self-titled release came out of Nadler's Box of Cedar label and The Tune described the new disc as "a delicately-crafted affair executed with poise and grace -- this music is nothing short of brilliant."
Marissa released her last two albums on Kemado (and Mexican Summer, which was named after one of her songs), and decided to venture out on her own for this new album. She financed the recording through a successful Kickstarter campaign, and has sold her own handmade albums through Etsy. After performing several dates with Low and Timber Timbre, she'll be embarking on a headlining tour throughout July with Faces On Film.

The Acorn Play Three Nights in NYC/NJ in July
DOWNLOAD - The Acorn - "Restoration"
Ottawa band The Acorn will be performing three NYC dates in mid-July in support of their forthcoming Bella Union CD, No Ghost. There will also be a limited edition of 300 180-gram, red-pressed vinyl edition with hand-silkscreened covers.
Here are the local tour dates:
Tue. 7/13 at Maxwell's [Hoboken]
Wed. 7/14 at Mercury Lounge [NYC]
Thu. 7/15 at Littlefield [Brooklyn]
The band have been traveling the world for two years on headline runs in support of their concept album, Glory Hope Mountain, which is a concept album about front man Rolf Klausener's mother and her life story. After several dates with Phosphorescent, Calexico, and Bowerbirds among others, they retreated to an isolated cottage in northern Quebec earlier this year to work on No Ghost.
NPR calls The Acorn's music, "intimate and beautifully orchestrated," with Mojo saying it's "robust and kaleidoscopic." Pitchfork said Glory Hope Mountain was "epic and satisfying," SPIN made them an 'Artist of the Day,' calling their music "almost folkloric," and Billboard called the album,"an apt command for the listener."
