The Doc Marshalls Release New LP on May 29th / Show at Mercury Lounge on June 10th

The Doc Marshalls Release New LP on May 29th / Show at Mercury Lounge on June 10th
The Doc Marshalls’ front man, Nick Beaudoing, has arrived in Nashville armed with an album that still reeks of Brooklyn, his former home. Whereas previous releases evoked a humid musical landscape along the Texas-Louisiana border, the Doc Marshalls’ new album, Look Out, Compadre, sheds the honky-tonk and Cajun two-steps in favor of crooked, shimmering folk reminiscent of Bonnie Prince Billy and A.A. Bondy.

This hard left turn comes on the heels of years of preaching roots music in indie rock venues, where country flavors are seldom heard. Look Out, Compadre is a surprising and welcome departure, demonstrating that even hardcore country boys are unable to keep the city at bay forever.

Eager to capture the moment of a signature sound in flux, the band enlisted engineer Alex Lipsen at Headgear Studio in Williamsburg, Brooklyn (Phosphorescent, Nada Surf) with the goal of recording in an atmosphere where instruments like the fiddle and pedal steel would be treated as outsiders. Session musicians such as guitarist Josh Kaufman (Dawn Landes, Rocketship Park) further sharpen the edges of songs whose lyrics spin tales of last stands, exploding houses, and the calm that forgiveness brings.

A versatile repertoire has taken the Doc Marshalls from indie rock clubs in NYC, to rural Texas dancehalls, Europe, and countless festival stages in between. Their busy touring schedule has afforded them the opportunity to open for the likes of Bobby Bare Jr., Carrie Rodriguez, the Bottle Rockets, and even reggae legend Burning Spear.

The Doc Marshalls are playing a record release show at Mercury Lounge on June 10th. This is a late show - opener Benyaro (indie acoustic soul and roots power duo) is going on at 9PM and The Doc Marshalls are going on at 10PM. Advance tickets are $10 and the show is 21+.

A.A. Bondy - "Believers" CD Review (Fat Possum) / Show at Bowery Ballroom on Nov. 22nd

AA Bondy - The Heart Is Willing by fatpossum

A.A. Bondy - 'Believers' CD Review (Fat Possum) / Show at Bowery Ballroom on Nov. 22ndA.A. Bondy is releasing his third disc Believers (Fat Possum) on Tuesday and this follow-up to 2009’s When The Devil’s Loose shows Bondy continuing to expand on the full band sound of When the Devil’s Loose but moving away from his folky/Americana past into darker “Dax Riggs” territory.

Believers was recorded in the spring of 2011 by Rob Schnapf at Mant/Kingsize Studios in Glassell Park, California. The new ten songs (40 minute) disc sets a dark and melancholy mood and the disc’s press release states that these songs were “conjured during and between dreams, in bare rooms, and on the late night streets of America.” This is a lonely album where Bondy’s stark vocals and the steady undercurrent of neo-psychedelic echo and reverb will pull you into the restless night, right alongside of him.

In a 2009 interview, Bondy described When The Devil’s Loose as “something that more generates a feeling rather than telling someone how to feel” and I feel this new disc goes a step further in bringing out that emotive current within his music. This is also the closest that Bondy has gotten to replicating the sound of his live shows and he is joined on the disc by Ben Lester (drums, piano, pedal steel) and Macey Taylor (bass). Standout tracks are the slow burning “Skull & Bones” and the up-tempo disc opener “The Heart is Willing”.

"Believers is the last couple years in one long exposure" – Bondy

A.A. Bondy's New Disc "Believers" Comes Out Sept. 13th on Fat Possum

Download: A.A. Bondy - "No Man Shall" (live on Laundromatinee.com)

A.A. Bondy's New Disc 'Believers' Comes Out Sept. 13th on Fat PossumThere were stories late last year of a hand injury sidelining A.A. Bondy but he obviously recovered quickly as the singer/guitarist recorded his third solo disc earlier this year and announced a release date of September 13th for Believers.

Believers is ten new songs by A.A. Bondy. They were conjured during and between dreams, in bare rooms, and on the late night streets of America. It was recorded in the spring of 2011 by Rob Schnapf at Mant/Kingsize Studios in Glassell Park, California. Musicians include Ben Lester (drums, piano, pedal steel) and Macey Taylor (bass). Believers is the follow up to the 2009 album When The Devil's Loose, and is Bondy's third for Fat Possum Records.

"Not many people know this, but he's not a bad horn player, but he only played during particular celestial events. At least that's what he told me." - Gladys Broussard (secretary, B&O Railroad)

Believers is the last couple years in one long exposure. Made of scenes gathered in actual places (upstate New York, Mississippi, California), but also scenes from an other place. A finger on a dream globe. One foot in the dirt, one in the ether, unseen voice at your ear. On the tide with the Surfer King. - Bondy

Believers track listing:

The Heart Is Willing
Skull & Bones
Down In The Fire (Lost Sea)
Surfer King
123 Dupuy Street
Hiway/Fevers
Drmz
The Twist
Rte. 28/Believers
Scenes From A Circus

This new disc follows 2007's American Hearts and is somewhat of a departure from the sparse acoustic sounds of this first disc. On When The Devil's Loose, A.A. Bondy recorded with a full band which gives gives the songs a roomy sound and provides a 'floor' beneath Bondy's world-weary vocals.
