Wes Anderson : American Laundromat Records Announce Vinyl Release of 'I Saved Latin! A Tribute to Wes Anderson'

American Laundromat Records is proud to announce their popular Wes Anderson tribute I Saved Latin! A Tribute To Wes Anderson is getting the vinyl treatment. The 24-song, double-LP is scheduled for release on March 10, 2015 and includes all 23 songs from the original CD plus an exclusive new track recorded and mixed over the summer by French chanteuse Marianne Dissard who tackled Francoise Hardy’s classic “Le Temps de L’Amour” used by Anderson in Moonrise Kingdom. In addition to the exclusive bonus track, the LP features brand new cover art by critically-acclaimed illustrator Lonny Unitus who once again handled all art direction.

American Laundromat Records has committed to pressing the 2xLP on 180 Gram Black Vinyl in a Dual Gatefold Jacket. The release is limited to 1,000 copies worldwide and available for $26.00 + shipping exclusively from the label’s website.

Those Darlins Release Cover of Iggy Pop's "Repo Man" from Upcoming 'Repo Man Soundtrack' Tribute (American Laundromat Records)

American Laundromat Records had a blast working on a tribute to one of their favorite flicks of all time - the 1984 cult classic "Repo Man" written & directed by Alex Cox and starring Harry Dean Stanton and Emilio Estevez. The original soundtrack celebrated the southern California punk movement of the late 70's/early 80's with bands Black Flag, Circle Jerks, Suicidal Tendencies, The Plugz, and Iggy Pop. American Laundromat Records recruited an outstanding group of artists to rewire these now-classic punk tracks, including; Those Darlins, Matthew Sweet, Amanda Palmer, Mike Watt, The Tellers, Black Francis, Weekend, Polar Bear Club, Moses Coltrane, New York Rivals, and The Suicide Dolls. The album officially releases September 18, 2012.

Earlier today, American Laundromat Records announced the release of an exclusive iTunes advance single from this upcoming album. Those Darlins cover "Repo Man" which was written and originally performed by Iggy Pop for the cult 1984 film. Those Darlins recorded their cover with Ed Rawls and Justin McNeight at The Living Room in Atlanta, GA where they recorded their latest full length release Screws Get Loose.

I'm not sure what will happen first: the Age of Quarrel line-up of the Cro-Mags reunite, The Smiths reunite or hell freezes over. It is a funny world though as I can remember listening to a mid-90's interview with Metallica where they were laughing when asked about the possibility of ever playing again with Dave Mustaine and Dave just played with Metallica at the band's 30th Anniversary show in San Francisco.

For anyone who needs a fix while waiting to see whether the rumor is true that The Smiths are reuniting for Coachella 2012, American Laundromat Records has just issued a loving 2-CD tribute to The Smiths - Please, Please, Please. Following up on Morrissey and Johnny Marr's fascination with English pop-singer Sandie Shaw, American Laundromat Records secured rights to use a Sandie Shaw photograph for the cover of this new tribute disc and tapped rock-poster designer Lonny Unitus (Apples In Stereo, The Decemberists, Willie Nelson) to design the cover art and eco-wallet packaging.

The twenty indie-rock band on this collection keep the core foundation of Marr and Morrissey's songs intact and immediately recognizable but each of these bands reinterprets and adds their individual imprint to the songs so this collection should pull in both long-time Smiths fans along with indie-rock fans who want to hear a new take on the band's back catalogue. Sadly, aside for a few greatest hits releases, The Smiths' catalogue has languished since the late 80's so this compilation breathes some new life into the band's well-established legacy.

Disc One starts with a shoe-gazer, shimmery cover of "Panic" by Kitten and some of the highlights on this first disc include Tanya Donnelly and Dylan in the Movies' languid cover of "Shoplifters of the World Unite" and the industrial leaning "Shop Me If You've Heard This One Before" by The Rest and "Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others" by Chikita Violenta. One of the other stand-outs on Disc One is Greg Laswell's moving piano-driven cover of "Half a Person.



Disc Two starts with Telekinesis' cover of "Sheila Take a Bow" which is one of the few tracks on this set that doesn't stray far from the Smiths' original. From there, Solvents pick things up with a shambling alt-country cover of "Is It Really So Strange?" and Wedding Present deliver an alt-metal version of "Hand in Glove". There are a number of engaging tracks on this second disc, which range from Trespassers William's shoe-gazer version of "There is a Light That Never Goes Out" to Girl in a Coma's alt-punk delivery of "Rubber Ring" to a Blondie styled cover of "I Know It's Over" by Elk City. This disc closes on a striaght-forward note with a glistening cover of "Reel Around the Fountain" from Built To Spill's Doug Martsch.

American Laundromat Records (ALR) is proud to announce plans to release a Smiths tribute CD titled Please, Please, Please: a tribute to The Smiths. It was weird… I felt like the universe was telling me now was the time. I started reaching-out to artists in November and the response was overwhelmingly positive. For the album cover, American Laundromat Records secured rights to use a Sandie Shaw photograph and tapped rock-poster designer Lonny Unitus (Apples In Stereo, The Decemberists, Willie Nelson) to design the cover art and eco-wallet packaging. Sandie Shaw (aka Sandra Goodrich) is an English Pop-Singer, who was one of the most successful British female singers of the 1960s. Both Morrissey and Johnny Marr of The Smiths were “two incurable Sandie Shaw fans” and reportedly wrote her a letter back in 1983 stating so. In April of 1984, Shaw recorded a version of The Smiths Hand in Glove (their first single) which peaked just inside the UK Top 30. She later collaborated with the band and has covered songs by both The Smiths and Morrissey.

“I wanted to do something interesting for the cover art. Most importantly, I wanted it to look like a Smiths album. Beyond that though, I thought the photograph we used needed to be something that had deeper meaning. Once I learned of the Sandie Shaw connection, I sourced hundreds of old photographs and finally found the one of Sandie lying in the leaves in that fantastic pea coat. I thought it was perfect immediately. Not only because the tribute will be an Autumn release, but because Sandie’s expression and the whole feel of the photo, in my opinion, is reminiscent of The Smiths music. It was a lucky find, and Ms. Shaw has been very gracious in allowing us to use it.” – Joe Spadaro, American Laundromat Records

Last week, I had the pleasure of talking with Cindy Wheeler (vocals/guitar) from the indie-rock band The Caulfield Sisters. Cindy talked about her original band Pee Shy, the 'reactivated' Caulfield Sisters, the band's new single "Two Songs from Mohawk" and more.

The Caulfield Sisters just released “Two Songs From Mohawk”, an iTunes-exclusive digital single. These two tracks, “Caterwauling” and “I See Your Face”, are the first new songs from The Caulfield Sisters since their critically-acclaimed debut CD-EP “Say It With Fire” was released several years back. Both tracks were recorded and produced by The Caulfield Sisters at front-woman Cindy Wheeler’s house in the Catskills (New York). Mastering was done by Sean Glonek (Tanya Donelly, Kristin Hersh, Frank Black, OK Go) at SRG Studios in New Jersey.

American Laundromat Records announces the release of “Two Songs From Mohawk” an iTunes-exclusive digital single featuring two newly recorded tracks by Brooklyn-based all-girl trio The Caulfield Sisters.

Julie Peel Kicks Off Second Tour in Support of Debut Album // Show at Union Hall on Nov. 15th

Julie Peel is a Canadian singer/songwriter who released her debut CD, Near The Sun, last year on American Laundromat Records. With lyrics that sound like semi-confessional stories and a layered, atmospheric production, some immediate points of comparison are artists like Beth Orton and Lisa Germano.

Julie kicked off her fall tour on Friday, October 1st in France and the tour will take Julie to Spain, Germany, Norway, and London before she heads to the USA for several key dates. This is Julie’s second tour in support of her critically-acclaimed debut album Near The Sun. During this current tour, Julie will be performing songs from Near The Sun, and introducing several new songs from her upcoming second album.

"It smells like beer and children in here" -- Jenny Owens Young

Yesterday, American Laundromat Records hosted an all-ages benefit show for The Valerie Fund at Joe's Pub which featured Tanya Donelly, Jenny Owen Youngs and Julie Peel.

The Valerie Fund is a NYC-based charity that supports the comprehensive care of children with cancer and blood disorders. Established in 1976 in memory of nine-year-old Valerie Goldstein, The Valerie Fund Children’s Centers, located at 7 major hospitals, comprise one of the nation’s largest networks of health care facilities for children with cancer and blood disorders.



It was a great show for a great cause. It was also refreshing that none of the artists "dumbed down" their set to play to the kids in the audience. (Any adult who has every sat through a kid's show will know exactly what I mean.) Julie Peel kicked off the afternoon with a five song set that concluded with The Little Mermaid's "Under the Sea". After some face painting for the kids, Jenny Owens Young took the stage. She seemed a bit surprised to see so many small faces right at the edge of the stage looking up at her and made a crack about not playing songs about divorce and cancer. After her set, American Laundromat Records gave away prizes to all the kids. (It made my 6-year-old's day to get a pack of Silly Bands and a Webkinz Warthog.)

Tanya Donelly wrapped up the afternoon with a set that included duets with her daughter and friends and Julie Peel.

Sing Me To Sleep - Tanya Donelly, Jenny Owen Youngs, and Julie Peel perform at Joe’s Pub on June 13th to Launch New Children’s Charity CD

American Laundromat Records (ALR) is hosting a CD release party at Joe's Pub on June 13th to celebrate the release of ALR’s new charity CD Sing Me To Sleep - Indie Lullabies. The show features performances from Tanya Donelly, Jenny Owen Youngs, and Julie Peel, along with face-painting, balloons, crafts and more.

Sing Me To Sleep - Indie Lullabies features whimsical adaptations of popular songs and lullabies by various independent artists, including: Stars, Tanya Donelly, Neil Halstead, Dean & Britta, Telekinesis, and many more. American Laundromat’s goal with this album is not only to raise awareness and support for The Valerie Fund, but also to provide something of beauty for indie music appreciators to share with their kids.

100% of proceeds from the sale of Sing Me To Sleep are donated to The Valerie Fund, a NYC-based charity that supports the comprehensive care of children with cancer and blood disorders. Julie Peel Plays Last Minute Show at Cameo Gallery Tonight (20th/Dec)

Canada-to-Brooklyn transplant Julie Peel has announced a last minute full-band show tonight at Cameo Gallery opening for Uninhabitable Mansions (which is a new band that features members of Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Au Revoir Simone, Radical Dad, and Dirty On Purpose).

Julie takes the stage at 8PM tonight - cover TBD.

Julie released her well-received debut CD Near The Sun (American Laundromat Records) a few months ago which I thought sounded like a cross between Michelle Shocked and Lisa Germano. Below is a live solo performance of one of the songs from Near the Sun along with a Weezer cover.

Julie Peel is a Canadian singer/songwriter who just released her debut CD, Near The Sun, on American Laundromat Records. With lyrics that sound like semi-confessional stories and a layered, atmospheric production, some immediate points of comparison are artists like Beth Orton and Lisa Germano.

Julie first came to my attention with a stripped down cover of The Cure’s “A Night Like This” which was included on the Just Like Heaven: A Tribute to The Cure compilation.



While this cover tune is a good started point to Julie’s music, the music on this CD is much more varied. On a number of songs, Julie sings with a smooth and subdued voice but there are other songs (“Once More With Feeling”, “Alone”) captures an Americana/alt-country sound (think Michelle Shocked). The alt-country imagery on these songs is further strengthened by the use of ukulele, banjo, glockenspiel and kazoo. Rounding things out are subtly catching pop tunes like “Living in a Movie”.



According to a recent interview, Julie played all the instruments on the demo CD that proceeded Near The Sun. While Julie plays a number of instruments on each track (in addition to producing the CD), she is joined by two – three backing musicians on most of the tracks. Pulling from another interview, Julie said “I prefer to play with musicians, ‘cause like you said, it’s already intimate material, and I don’t really like to be the center of the attention. “


American Laundromat Records will celebrate the release of "Near The Sun" with a free show (open to the public) on October 10th (8pm - 11pm) at Pete's Candy Store in Brooklyn, NY. Julie Peel will perform with her full band (traveling as far away as France and Sweden to back her), and there will be very special guest performances by The Caulfield Sisters, Dylan in the Movies, Emilie Mover, and Rachel Browne.

Though her contributions to the ALR compilations were noteworthy in their own right, this collection of original material bears testimony to Julie Peel’s own dynamic pop sensibilities.
