Frank Zappa - "AAAFNRAAAAAM Birthday Bundle 2011" CD Review (Digital Only Release)

I hate to sound like Tom Hanks in the movie Big but “I don’t get it”.

Frank Zappa - AAAFNRAAAAAM Birthday Bundle 2011 CD Review (Digital Only Release)On December 21st, Frank Zappa’s estate released The Frank Zappa AAAFNRAAAAAM Birthday Bundle 2011 which is a digital-only release of Zappa covers and previously unreleased live recordings by Zappa himself. The “challenge” with this compilation is that there appears to be no unifying theme linking either the tracks included or the selection of cover artists. Without this – this compilation comes off as a random hodge-podge of songs.

Here is how this compilation breaks down – you have nine cover tracks by predominately little-known artists. The two “known” artists are Van Morrison and Serj Tankian who respectively cover “Dead Girls of London” and “Yellow Snow”. “Dead Girls of London” dates from a 1979 recording session and was “originally supposed to be sung by Van Morrison, but since Morrison was signed to the Warner Bros. Records record label who Zappa was in a legal dispute with at the time, Zappa was unable to release the song on his label with Morrison's vocals, and so they were re-recorded. This early version was heavily bootlegged before its official release.” (Wikipedia) Serj’s version of “Yellow Snow” is ‘middle-of-the-road’ as his straight-forward cover noticeably lacks the vocal timing of the original. The remaining tracks are straight-forward covers as well with no particular stand-outs with the exception of “Bobby Brown (Se Upp För F-N)” which is bizarrely sung in Swedish.

There are two Zappa originals that have been digitally ‘played with’ by members of the family. The first, “Wowie Zowie”, takes the original Freak Out track and overdubs vocals from Zappa granddaughter Mathilda Plum Doucette Zappa. The second, “Cosmik Debris”, adds Frank’s guitar and vocals to the ZPZ lineup. Remembering the Jim Morrison and Marc Bolan spoken word sessions later set to music after the artist’s death (bad idea) and Natalie Cole superimposing herself alongside her passed-away father in the video “Unforgettable” (unforgivable), I firmly believe this sort of digital slicing and dicing completely violates the artist’s integrity.

Lastly, there are two previously unreleased Zappa tracks. The first is “Another Variation of the Formerly Secret” which was recorded at The Palladium on 10/30/80. Personally, I always thought Frank’s Tinsletown Rebellion band was one of his strongest post-Mothers lineups so I’d love to hear the full show. The second track is a stellar live recording of “Peaches” which was recorded in Vienna on May 8, 1988 with the jazzier Broadway the Hard Way lineup.

Aside for the two live tracks from Frank Zappa and the Van Morrison cover, caveat emptor.

Not Blood, Paint Play Knitting Factory on July 16th w/ Jangula, Yellow Dogs and Charlie Slick

Tommy by notbloodpaint

Not Blood, Pain Play Knitting Factory on July 16th w/ Jangula, Yellow Dogs and Charlie SlickI've been a fan of Not Blood, Paint for a while so rather than rehash some of my past write-ups...FreeWilliamsburg.com described the band as follows: "They are music, they are spectacle, they are hit ’n run theater, car crash club night, they are a disorientating re-imagining of what four men, five coats of make-up and accomplished musicality can do with a six by ten space."

Also on the bill is Brooklyn synth-pop/college rock band Jangula who put on a h*ll of a show (check out Genji Glove from the band's self-titled EP). I don't know much about The Yellow Dogs (Iran to Brooklyn trasnplants) but they have gotten positive write-ups on their post-punk sound. The Knitting Factory website describes Charlie Slick as "a musician and inventor who resides in Ann Arbor, MI. He currently performs with Molly Mascow and Micah Vanderhoof. He has released 5 full length albums, his most recent, ELRON HUBBARD, is available on Vinyl." (check out Charlie Slick - "Money")

Advanced tickets for the show are $9 and $13 (DOS). Doors are at 7PM and the show starts at 8PM.

Frank Zappa - The Freak-Out List DVD Review

Frank Zappa - The Freak-Out List DVD ReviewIn 1966, Frank Zappa listed 179 names as influencers in the inside cover of the Zappa & the Mothers debut release Freak Out. The Freak-Out List takes an in-depth and fascinating look at a cross-section of names from this list. Zappa's influences from three musical genres are explored in detail - classical, doo-wop and jazz.

The disc starts with an in-depth look at classical composers Edgar Verese, Igor Stravinsky and Arnold Schoenberg and how their composition style (twelve tone technique, cut & paste writing, etc.) directly influenced Zappa's music. There are some great clips of Zappa from the Freak Out era (unfortunately, there are no complete songs) along with a later-day clip of Zappa directing a performance of Verese's "Ionisation". One of the narrators mentions that Zappa recorded an unreleased album of Verese pieces entitled The Rage & The Fury.

The doo wop segment highlights how the vocal harmonies (with groups like Hank Ballard & the Midnighters and Richard Berry & the Pharaohs) and blues guitar riffs (Johnny Guitar Watson) of this era influenced Zappa's late-60's albums. A lot of focus is given to Johnny Watson and his friendship with Frank. Watson played on One Size Fits All (1975), Them or Us (1984), Thing-Fish (1984) and Frank Zappa Meets the Mothers of Prevention (1985) and Zappa stated that Watson's "'Three Hours Past Midnight' inspired [him] to become a guitarist".

The final segment focuses on Zappa's pioneering fusion of rock and jazz sounds. This segment focuses on musicians like Miles Davis (and how Hot Rats predated the the sound of Bitches Brew). There are some great interviews with George Duke and he talks about joining the Mothers as the band's influences started moving away from doo wop and toward the jazz sounds that were on Waka Jawaka and The Grand Wazoo.

This is an engaging DVD as the story of Zappa's influences is told by music historians, Zappa biographers Ben Watson and Greg Russo and Mothers Of Invention members Ian Underwood, Don Preston and George Duke.
