Die Krupps - "Als Wären Wir Für Immer” CD EP Review

After a thirteen year hiatus from the studio, Die Krupps just released a new eight-track EP “Als Wären Wir Für Immer” (I believe this translates as “When We Were Forever”) which serves as a teaser for a full-length that is supposed to follow sometime next year. The new EP contains five new tracks (with the track “Dr. Mabuse” being a remake of Propaganda’s 1984 single) and three remixes.

This release marks a return to Die Krupps’ EBM roots and the heavy-metal guitar sounds from the band’s past releases are either muted or gone. Three of the tracks are sung in English (“Beyond”, “The Chameleon Man”, “Dr. Mabuse”) and all three have memorable synth lines that are powered by pulsing mid-tempo darkwave, dancefloor beats. The most memorable of these three tracks is the catchy buildup and exploding chorus of leadoff track “Beyond” on which Die Krupps collaborated with Chilean industrial band Vigilante. The remaining two new songs (“Die Macht”, “Als Wären Wir Für Immer”) are sung in German and these tracks are clanging, angry industrial tunes (which never cross into heavy metal territory). All five of these tracks go a long way toward making this EP memorable. The problem comes at the end of the disc with the three remixes as, while they aren’t bad, they aren’t that different from the studio tracks.

While Die Krupps doesn’t break any new ground with this release, they continue to excel at their brand of industrial dance music which makes their forthcoming 2011 release something to look forward to.

Nitzer Ebb: Industrial Complex CD Review (Major Records)

Earlier this year, Nitzer Ebb released Industrial Complex (Major Records), which marks their first album of new material since 1995’s Big Hit. Core duo Douglas McCarthy and Bon Harris are re-joined by Big Hit era percussionist Jason Payne and the band sounds remarkably fresh and relevant for having taken a fifteen year hiatus from the studio.

Continuing to mine the industrial dance/EBM sound, Industry Complex sounds like something that could have come out of Mute or Some Bizzare’s catalog from the mid-80s. The tracks range from the dark and sleazy to jackhammer pounding industrial dance beats. The disc starts out aggressively with the track “Promises” and, while song tempos vary, the band never loses its sense of urgency and intensity. Douglas McCarthy’s voice has held up well over the years and his vocals range from anthemic dance floor chants to oozing with a sense of cool malevolence on some of the slower numbers. There are a few tracks on Industrial Complex that should be familiar to anyone who has seen the band live over the last couple years as the hard-hitting “Payroll” and the Depeche Mode sounding “Down on Your Knees” have been part of the set for the last few go-arounds. Adding to the Depeche Mode comparison, Martin Gore added (somewhat buried) vocals to “Once You Say”. The overall sound of the disc is full but edgy and uncluttered so the music doesn’t tip over like some of the tracks on Big Hit.

Nitzer Ebb seems to be coming through in concert on a regular basis since reuniting in 2006. The band started the year by touring with like-minded Depeche Mode and just recently played a show at Gramercy Theater. Below is a live video of “Join in the Chant” from that show.



Nitzer Ebb is currently off the road but the band has a one-off date scheduled for January 28th of next year in Guadalajara, Mexico.

Throbbing Gristle Release Ulta-Limited Merchandise Through New Webstore

It is tough to be a Throbbing Gristle fan as concerts are few and far between and releases generally come out in very limited formats. There are a couple of new items added to band's new online store that are sure to get both fans and collectors drooling.

BOUND FIVE CD TOTEM SET
In addition to the 4 Totem Editions from Mute, there is a Japanese release of the Endless Not which contains a fifth Totemic Gift item, in stainless steel.

For the avid collector we have gathered and bound in brass and jute string (which can be re-tied) a very small number of Sets of all five cds containing one of each of the five Totems.

Peter Christopherson has produced a sixth Totemic Gift in hand-beaten 23-carat gold, of which at present only one exists. For the collector who craves a truly unique art object, it can be purchased here.

The Desertshore Installation 12 Cd Wallet
As you may have seen, TG will be presenting an Installation at London's ICA, on June 1-3, 2007 during which they will be recording the initial parts for a new album which is based on their interpretation of Nico's classic Desertshore album, which we hope after final production, to release in 2008.

These six two-hour sessions will be recorded in full on a Soundfield microphone, then a small number pressed onto 12 discs in cd-r format, the size of the edition being based largely on the number of pre-orders received.

The resulting set of 12 cd-rs, housed in a 12 page stamped cd wallet, will be available from this store only - a must for interested parties unable to attend in person, and for all serious collectors of TG Art.
