Havok - 'Unnatural Selection' CD Review / Show at St. Vitus Bar on August 7th (Candlelight Records)

Havok - 'Unnatural Selection' CD Review / Show at St. Vitus Bar on August 7th (Candlelight Records)
Denver thrash metallers Havok are back with their third full-length disc, Unnatural Selection (released last month on Candlelight Records) and their first headlining tour of North America, which kicked off this week at Launchpad in Albuquerque, NM. The local tour stop is at St. Vitus Bar on August 7th and Havock is playing with TBA (let’s spread a ‘stupid’ rumor – TBA = Municipal Waste). Tickets are $10 in advance and $12 DOS.

Unnatural Selection has everything that you would expect in a thrash album: political themed lyrics, winding, chugging guitar riffs and screaming solos, aggressive sneering vocals and rapid fire drumming. What is refreshing is there is a mix of old school metal in the band’s sound – the disc’s lead-off single, “Give Me Liberty…Or Give Me Death” has some blistering riffs and a nice bass/drum groove that could easily be compared to bands like Megadeth and Exodus. Immediately shifting gears, this is followed by “It is True”, which comes across somewhat like an 80’s arena-rocker, though with some funky bass grooves and off-kilter, winding guitar lines intermixed with the crunchy hard-rock riffs. The band’s sound starts moving toward doom toward the back-end of the disc, with the down-tuned “Worse Than War” and this track is a perfect lead-in to the band’s cover of Black Sabbath’s “Children of the Grave”. The band ends the disc on a “thrashy” note with the aggressive and galloping title track “Unnatural Selection”.

On the majority of the songs, in addition to the chugging thrash riffs, there is some great guitar interplay between David Sanchez and Reece Scruggs whose playing ranges from technical shredding to AC/DC meets Iron Maiden hard-rock riffs. Sanchez’s vocals also spans the range from a clean “punkish” sneer to Dave Mustaine style throat shredding rasps and most of the song choruses are shout-along gang vocals. Pete Webber pounds the drums unmercifully (there is a nice, but brief drum solo on disc opener “I Am the State”) and does a nice job of locking into a groove with newcomer, bassist Mike Leon.

The new disc has a really clean sound and was produced by vocalist/guitarist David Sanchez and mixed by Terry Date (Pantera, Overkill, Deftones). The album also features original artwork from Polish illustrator Rafal Wechterowicz (Slayer, Mastodon) and was mastered by James Murphy (Aborted, World Under Blood, Abigail Williams).

Onslaught - "Sounds of Violence" CD Review (AFM Records)

Onslaught - 'Sounds of Violence' CD Review (AFM Records)British thrash metal band Onslaught reunited in 2005 and the band’s third post-reunion disc, Sounds of Violence, is due out Feb. 8th on AFM Records. In the ‘great’ Onslaught tradition of making line-up changes with every release, post-reunion members James Hinder and Alan Jordan have been replaced by Jeff Williams and Andy Rosser-Davies.

Onslaught plays old-school, angry thrash in the spirit of Testament and Megadeth and, while this release doesn’t break any new ground, Onslaught does what they do well. The disc starts with “Into the Abyss “, which is a symphonic opener that is punctuated by a military drum beat. This serves as the build-up to the brutally aggressive “Born for War” which is guaranteed to get the pit going. Guitarists Nige Rockett and Andy Rosser-Davies alternate between chugging grooves and great non-technical (non-wankery) leads. Steve Grice pummels the double-bass while keeping galloping beat. It has been too many years since I’ve heard The Force (which marked Sy Keeler's debut with Onslaught) so I can’t make a dead-on comparison but Keeler voice’s has held up well over the years. His vocals range from a harsh bark to melodic clean vocals and he doesn’t seem to have lost any of his past force and power.

Lyrically, the band is angry and the dominant lyrical themes seems to be hatred and war. While the band doesn’t go back to the explicitly Satanic lyrics of Power From Hell, a few of the songs (“Children of God” and “Antiheist”) have explicit anti-religious themes.

The disc ends with the aptly titled melancholy piano outro “End Of The Storm (Outro)” before kicking into the bonus track, which is a cover of Motorhead’s “Bomber”. This last track was released as an iTunes single last year with all profits donated to the Help For Heroes charity. The cover version is a straight-forward run-through that features guest appearances from Motorhead’s Phil Campbell and Sodom’s Tom Angelripper.

Crown the Lost - Blind Faith Loyalty CD Review (Cruz Del Sur)

Crown the Lost - BLind Faith Loyalty CD ReviewMelodic thrashers Crown the Lost will be releasing their second CD on May 5th on Cruz Del Sur. The new disc is entitled Blind Faith Loyalty and it follows Crown the Lost's impressive self-released debut Reverence Dies Within (2006).

The band recorded this disc in the early part of 2008 and this is what led to the deal with Cruz Del Sur. Label owner Enrico Leccese said "I was so blown away by their perfect balance between aggressive thrash metal and classic heavy metal that I felt the urge to offer them to be part of our roster. I am sure 'Blind Faith Loyalty' will be one of the albums you'll remember on your 2009 best of the year lists."

I realize that genre labels are very fluid, especially in metal, but I would categorize this disc as (aggressive) epic power metal as opposed to thrash. Lead guitarist Joe Bonaddio plays complex melodic leads that complement Chris Renaldi's clean vocals and operatic vibrato. A chugging bass line and pounding blast beat drumming keeps this disc out of "Iron Maiden" territory but it isn't that far removed (which isn't a bad thing). According to the band's MySpace page, this disc is the result of a year's worth of intense songwriting. This effort has obviously paid off for the band as there isn't a bad track on the disc. Each of the ten tracks are over five minutes in length so solid songwriting allows each song to develop and stand on its own. There are a couple tracks from Blind Faith Loyalty streaming on the band's MySpace profile and the full CD is streaming on Cruz Del Sur's website.

Crown the Lost are doing some touring behind this upcoming release (which included a show with Exodus earlier this month). Here are the band's upcoming tour dates:

May 09 ,2009, 9:30PM, The Smiling Moose, Pittsburgh, PA (Blind Faith Loyalty CD Release Show)
May 23, 2009, 9:00PM, C-Rock Live, Pittsburgh, PA
May 30, 2009, 9:00PM, RPM’s w/ Jacob’s Dream, Bridgeville, PA
June 20, 2009, 10:00PM, Pizon’s Place w/ DOFKA, Smock, PA

Bonded By Blood: Live Video from Show at Maric Lanes Bowling Alley In Astoria, NY 3-28-09

California thrash metalers Bonded By Blood made their first trip to the East Coast last month as part of the Masters of Disaster tour. The local tour stop was a free show at Maric Lanes in Astoria, Queens. To echo a comment from Bonded By Blood frontman Jose "Aladdin" Barrale, I never thought I'd be thrashing out on top of a bowling alley but it was a great show. I'd love to see more DIY-style thrash/metal shows put on in the NYC area.

Here is some live footage of Bonded By Blood playing "Mind Pollution" and "The Evil Within".

The Masters of Disaster tour (which features Bonded By Blood, Witchaven and Exmortus) wraps up next week with a few more West Coast dates:
4/24 San Jose CA- West Valley College
4/25 San Francisco CA-Thee Parkside
5/01 Hollywood CA-The Knitting Factory "Thrasho De Mayo IV" w/Exumer
5/02 Reno, NV- The Underground

Bonded By Blood's debut CD, Feed the Beast, is is available from Earache Records' Webstore in a limited edition 2CD pressing that contains two bonus tracks.

Bonded By Blood, Exmortus, Witchaven, Martyrd: Pictures from Free Show in Queens, NYC 3-28-09

After a series of venue switches, the Masters of Disaster tour hit Maric Lanes in Astoria last Saturday night. This was an old-school, up-close experience with four hard-hitting thrash bands playing on the top floor of this Queens bowling alley.

It was a great show - the bands gave it all and the crowd gave it right back. It was also nice to see that a good number of people made it out for the show, especially with this show having come together at the last minute.

The Masters of Disaster tour is currently in the Mid-West and are working their way toward the West Coast where they will be playing with Exumer on the final night of the tour (May 1st at the Knitting Factory in Hollywood).

Here is the complete list of upcoming tour dates:

4/7 Des Moines IA-Vaudville Mews
4/8 Kansas City MO-Riot Room

Holy Moses: Interview with Vocalist Sabina Classen (Thrash Metal)

Last week, I had the pleasure of speaking with Sabina Classen, vocalist from Holy Moses. Now in its 27th year, Holy Moses has its 12th disc, "Agony of Death", coming out (in the US) on October 7th on SPV Records. Sabina and I talked a bit about the concepts behind the new album, the band's upcoming first-ever tour of the US, her recent work with Doro Pesch and more.

Here is the link to the podcast feed View RSS XML and here is a direct link to the mp3.

You can check out the sound of the new disc on this video of the band rehersing for the Wacken Open Air Festival.

Municipal Waste: The Art of Partying CD Review

NME Highlights the Return of Thrash MetalNME says that thrash "is a style of music that makes you want to pour lager over your head and jump off speaker stacks" and that the genre was founded by a "bunch of young metal dudes in the Bay Area of San Francisco [who] thought 'Gee, this music is ace, but it'd sound better if it was played faster and by drunk people'". There is a nice writeup on Municipal Waste and SSS (Short Sharp Shock - Earache labelmates of Municipal Waste) in the article.

NME has it right in that Muicipal Waste takes their music back to the pre-Satanic era of thrash metal. The music is fast and aggressive, comparable musically and lyrically to early Suicidal Tendencies, DRI, Gang Green and Kill 'em All era Metallica. Municpal Waste's lyrics center around beer (naturally), high school food fights, and radioactive warfare. The CD artwork, by San Francisco based artist Andrei Bouzikov, matches well with the band's lyrical themes and shows radioactive zombies at a keg party.

This CD continues where the band's previous release, Hazardous Mutations, left off. The band really doesn't slow down through the 15 tracks on this disc. As expected, the music is tight, the guitar work shreds and drumming constantly pushes the music forward. Stand out tracks include "Headbanger Face Rip", "A.D.D. (Attention Deficit Destroyer)" and "Born to Party" (which has the chorus "Municipal Waste is going to f*ck you up"). All of these tunes are perfect shout-alongs for the mosh pit. The band also shows their great sense of humor with the voice-overs on Beer Pressure and the 'hidden' bonus track. The bonus track sounds like a cover of an 80's pop song (but I haven't been able to track down the details on the track).

This CD has been released in Europe and is available on iTunes but the US release date has pushed back to July 31st. What is interesting is that the UK version (available through Play.com) has two bonus tracks:
Thrashing's My Business....and Business Is Good (Bonus Track)
I Just Wanna Rock (Bonus Track).

The band is finishing a short tour with Agnostic Front with a show in Detroit tonight and then they are off to a month-long run through Europe in August.

Metal Church 1983 Demos Available Online

Metal Church has released five demos from 1983 as downloadable mp3s on their website. It is pretty cool that they are making this stuff available as this material has never been released (and I think only one of these tracks was circulating as a bootleg). These recordings document the transition of Shrapnel into the David Wayne fronted lineup of Metal Church. Four of the five tracks are instrumentals as Shrapnel's singer had left the band prior to this recording and the fifth, Deathwish, features David Wayne. (Note that contrary to what Wikipedia states, these mp3 are NOT the "Four Hymns" demo tape but are from an earlier recording).

Metal Church is playing BB King's with Belladona and Overkill on January 28, 2007.

Metal Church Playing BB King's, NYC on Jan. 28th

Metal ChurchNow in their 25th year, Metal Church return to town for a show at BB King's on January 28, 2007. Also on the bill are Joey Belladonna (from Anthrax), Overkill and Meliah Rage. Tickets are only $25.00.

This show is a bargain given the acts playing.

Metal Church's latest release A Light In the Dark was released this past June by SPV and is the band's second release with vocalist Ronny Munroe. This release also features a re-recording of Watch the Children Pray (originally released on 1986's The Dark) as a tribute to then recently deceased original vocalist David Wayne.
