Yoko Ono, Thurston Moore and Kim Gordon Release "Early in the Morning" to Benefit Orphans of the 3.11 Tsunami

I guess I shouldn't be surprised that Thurston and Kim are working together on a new project - X (the band) has survived infinitely longer than John and Exene's marriage. Earlier this month, Thurston, Kim and Yoko Ono announced that they were collaborating on some new material. The trio has confirmed that a six-track album, YOKOKIMTHURSTON, will be released September 25 in the U.S. and September 24 internationally (via Chimera Music).

An advanced single "Early in the Morning" from Yoko Ono, Kim Gordon, and Thurston Moore was just released as a limited edition vinyl pressing (ltd. to 1,000 copies). The one-sided 10" runs 14 minutes and has a beautiful etching by Yoko on flipside. Profits will be donated to Ashinaga Rainbow House to aid orphans of the 3.11 tsunami.

Yoko Ono is now 76 years old and she just released a 15-track CD of new material recorded with her Plastic Ono Band. The new disc, Between My Head and the Sky, was recorded at Sear Sound, the same studio that used to house the old Hit Factory (where Double Fantasy was recorded).

Sean Lennon both produced with Yoko and acted as musical leader for a group evenly divided between Japanese avant pop musicians, and downtown Manhattan improvisers. In the Japanese contingent is Yuka Honda of Cibo Matto, plus the current group led by Keigo “Cornelius” Oyamada, which includes Yuko Araki and Hirotaka Shimmy Shimizu. Cornelius and Ms. Ono performed together in Tokyo in January, and Yoko was so happy with the result she invited them over to record. In the Manhattan improv camp we find Shahzad Ismaily (guitar, bass, percussion), Erik Friedlander(cello), Michael Leonhart (trumpet, vibes), Daniel Carter (reeds) and Indigo Street (guitar) -- a singularly gifted group of instrumentalists.

Yoko and Sean were on The View earlier today for an interview and they also performed "I'm Going Away Smiling" from the new disc.

Yoko Ono on World Cafe, Feb. 16, 2007 Legal Music Download

Yoko Ono's interview on NPR's World Cafe has to be one of the more interesting things that I have run across on iTunes this past week. I am somewhat amazed that Yoko is in her early 70s as she remains current in today's music scene. The interview focuses on Ono's new release Yes, I'm a Witch on which 16 artists reinterpret and remix songs from Ono's back catalog. These artists included Flaming Lips, Cat Power, Peaches and many more. I haven't heard the CD but was impressed with the clips that were played during the interview (the Cat Power clip was especially compelling).
