Sunn O)))’s newest release, ØØ VOID, brings back into print the band’s second disc, which was recorded in Hollywood in 2000 with producer (and Goatsnake / Kyuss bassist) Scott Reeder and originally issued on Hydra Head.
Like most Southern Lord releases, ØØ VOID is available as a limited edition vinyl pressing (1K on cream colored vinyl / 5K total pressing). There is also a limited 2CD edition of ØØ VOID (1,000 copies) being sold through Southern Lord’s web store that includes a bonus disc that features the ØØ VOID album remixed by Nurse with Wound. (Note: this bonus disc was originally released on the 2CD edition of ØØ VOID that came out on the Japanese label Daymare Recordings in 2008). Stephen O’Malley is also selling a vinyl edition of the Nurse with Wound remixes entitled “The Iron Soul of Nothing” through his new Ideologic Organ label.
ØØ VOID epitomizes the band’s “Maximum Volume Yields Maximum Results” philosophy as the disc is composed of four epic-length (~15 minutes each) tracks of menacing, monolithic drone. Each of the songs moves at a glacial pace and the band builds up layer upon layer of notes and riffs that are held to their limit and then crash like an ocean wave prior to rising again with the next riff. These pieces (I can’t really call them songs) are like aural sculptures that are designed to be felt and experienced so this disc requires a time commitment to really appreciate its power.
For this release, the band is joined by guest bassist Stuart Dahlquist (Burning Witch, Goatsnake) and the disc includes contributions from both Petra Haden (violinist/vocals) and Pete Stahl (vocals). I haven’t pinpointed where Haden’s contributions are woven within this thick sonic tapestry but there are a lot of different layers and dimensions within these recording so different facets become visible after multiple listens. Pete Stahl’s adds ‘vocals’ to “NN O)))” which are buried under waves of buzzing electronics with the end result sounding like a ghost in the machine.
“The group approached the compositions of this album in a different way than their previous recordings: each member focused intently on one composition/piece and brought it into the recording session. Then, each of those songs that were brought in were translated to the other members and nuances were worked out, on the spot, in the studio. Greg Anderson (aka The Duke) brought in “NNO)))”, Stephen O’Malley (aka Mk Ultra Blizzard) brought in RA at Dusk, Stuart Dahlquist (aka G.Subharmonia) brought in Richard. The exception to all this was the inclusion of a rendition of a obscure Melvins song called Rabbits Revenge. This song was actually never recorded in the studio by the Melvins and the riffs were salvaged from a live tape that Anderson had of the band playing the Gorilla Gardens in Seattle from March of 1985!”—from SouthernLord.com
The Nurse with Wound remixes amount to a complete re-working of ØØVOID so there really isn’t a one-to-one mapping between this disc and the original recordings. There is a bit more “light” and ambiance in this reworking and one of the highlights is “Ash on the Trees (The Sudden Ebb of a Diatribe)” where Pete Stahl’s vocals are pulled out from beneath the wall of noise of the original track to become a menacing instrument of unease onto itself.
"In 2007 we commissioned Nurse With Wound to re-work the masters of SUNN O)))’s second album “ØØVOID” to be included as a bonus CD on the Japanese reissue of said album released a year later on Daymare Recordings. We dug up the original 2" reels from the 2000 session, had Mell Dettmer bake the tapes, made the multitrack transfers and send the drive over to IC studios. The initial brief was to hopefully come up with to come up with something in the vein of Nurse’s legendary Soliloquy for Lilith set (my favorite release of the collective). What was returned was way beyond our expectations, completely transformed and rediscovered material, including highlighting formerly obscured vocals of the legendary Pete Stahl (Scream, Wool, Goatsnake). A vast creepy sonic journey some part drone/depth of SUNN O))), other part concrete weirdness of Nurse, third part just downright out there in surreality and obscure referencing." —Stephen O'Malley

Earth: "A Bureaucratic Desire for Extra Capsular Extraction" CD Review (Southern Lord)
Last month, Southern Lord released Earth’s complete first recordings from 1990 as a single CD/double-LP set entitled A Bureaucratic Desire For Extra-Capsular Extraction. While these tracks have trickled out over the past two decades on Earth’s debut EP “Extra-Capsular Extraction” (1991) and as bonus tracks appended to the reissue of Sunn Amps and Smashed Guitars (2001), Mell Dettmer remastered the tracks on this reissue/compilation and gives Earth some noticeable dynamics and edges to the music that weren’t heard on the original releases.
This recording has a storied history as Earth was signed to Sub*Pop during the first wave of grunge and came to Sub*Pop’s attention during a show where Earth was opening for L7. (This show sounds as stylistically different as when The Ramones opened for Black Sabbath). These sessions were recorded with Mike Lastra at Smegma Studios in 1990 and the session master tapes ultimately went missing. Bootlegs of then unreleased songs first surfaced as 16RPM singles and later the complete session was issued as a limited edition bootleg LP entitled 10 1990.
One has to admire Sub*Pop for signing Earth as this isn’t the sort of music that was (or is) going to get on the radio but yet it spawned a legion of followers (notably Sunn O)))). The disc’s seven tracks are mostly glacially slow drone. There is a dark overtone across the disc but there are also elements of beauty and light. The music builds upon repetitive, throbbing waves of guitar lines which seem to organically grow in size while still leaving space to breathe. The cold, industrial clanging of the drum machine adds an element of heaviness to the music but there is enough texture and light to keep the music from tipping over into the claustrophobic darkness that some of the bands that followed Earth embraced. Earth even comes close to a ‘radio friendly’ song as Kurdt Cobain and Kelly Canary (from Dicklesss) sing on “Divine and Bright”, which is the closest that Earth will ever get to the “Seattle sound”.
Earth have recently been added to the lineup for the Sunn O))) curated Roadburn Festival which takes place on April 15, 2011 at the 013 venue in Tilburg, Holland.

Black Cobra - Chronomega CD Review (Southern Lord)
Sludge-metal band Black Cobra released their third full-length CD, Chronomega, at the end of September and this release marks the band's Southern Lord debut.
As a two-piece band, guitarist/vocalist Jason Landrian and drummer Rafael Martinez make a hell of a lot of noise and producer Billy Anderson (High on Fire, The Melvins, Sleep) gives the band a heavy, brutal sound. Black Cobra's sound fits well with some of the past and current California-based metal bands as they combine Kyuss' stoner groove with the heaviness of High on Fire. While the band is only a two-piece, Jason Landrian's bass-heavy guitar work (similar to Josh Homme's work with Kyuss) more than compensates for any assumed sonic short-comings.
Chronomega follows in the fuzzy, fast riffs that Black Cobra set down with Feather And Stone but this release shows the band continuing to diversify their sound as their songwriting continues to mature. There are less instrumental interludes and slower moments on this new release and length of the disc has increased by 50% over Feathers And Stone (which clocked in about 25 minutes). Producer Billy Anderson has helped the band sharpen their attack - Landrian's vocals are brought forward in the mix and the band changes up the tempos across the disc and plays with an aggression generally found in the speed metal/splatter genre.
Black Cobra are currently out on tour with Pelican and Disappearer which includes a local tour stop at Highline Ballroom on December 2nd. Here is the band's upcoming tour dates:

Eagle Twin - "The Unkindness of Crows" CD Review (Southern Lord)
DOWNLOAD: Eagle Twin - "Murder Of..." (MP3)Eagle Twin, who is a fairly new band based out of Salt Lake City, have their debut CD out on Southern Lord and it epitomizes the word HEAVY. The band is a two-piece composed of Gentry Densley (Ascend, Iceburn) on vocals/baritone guitar and and Tyler Smith on drums. While Iceburm evolved into an avant-jazz band, there is none of Iceburn's jazz/classical music influences here as The Unkindness of Crows is a 60+ minute slab of slow, monolithic stoner doom.
A good point of comparison for Eagle Twin's debut disc is The Melvins' Lysol. There is something of a pagan/tribal feel to the music as Tyler Smith beats out a hypnotic mantra while Gentry Densley layers in his dissonant guitar work, which ranges from sustained and twisted down-tuned notes (that can rise and fall like a roller coaster) and crashing tidal-wave sized riffs. Densley's vocals are crystal clear, almost spoken word, and there is no mistaking the menance in some of the stories he tells. Similar to the latest efforts from Sunn O))) and Earth, producer Randall Dunn captures the band's sound cleanly and lets the listener feel each crashing guitar riff. With the open and atmopheric production, The Unkindness of Crows comes across like the dark twin of Earth.
Lyrically, Eagle Twin focuses on animal mysticism with their primary attention being on crows. In a recent interview with The Aquarian, Gentry Densley said: "Well, I work in a jail library. I work in the jail giving people books, I’m the librarian. We used to have a copy of Ted Hughes’ The Crow. It’s a book of poems. He was poet laureate in Britain before he died, married to Sylvia Plath who wrote some awesome poems as well and The Bell Jar. I picked that up and the language of the poems would always suggest the music to me, the rhythm would give me riff ideas, and it came from that as well, but the lyrical ideas started meaning more to me and it seems like he takes all sorts of world myths and biblical things and imposes onto his crow character. I thought that was really interesting that you could take these universal myths and embody them into one character, just show how it all connects. So that started to interest me a lot more and so I started using the crow as my own variation on that character. Making up my own stories about him and stuff."
Eagle Twin was invited to open for all of Sunn O)))'s shows this year and the current tour finished up at the end of September. Here are some videos from the band's in-store performance at Vintage Vinyl and their show at Brooklyn Masonic.

Sunn O))): Interview with Greg Anderson (Southern Lord)
The Southern Lord label showcase is in town tomorrow night with Sunn O))), Earth, Pelican and Eagle Twin. The show is at Brooklyn Masonic Temple (317 Clermont Ave at Lafayette Ave.) and doors are at 8PM. Tickets are still available and are $25.
Over the summer, I had the opportunity to do a phone interview with Sunn O)))'s Greg Anderson but I completely dropped the ball on getting this posted. I finally got the audio file cleaned up and edited this past weekend.
The interview runs about 18 minutes and I talked with Greg about the new disc, Monoliths & Dimensions, the split-single Suicide tribute with Pansonic, touring plans, future releases on Southern Lord and more.

Sunn O))) - Pictures from the Knitting Factory, NYC 10-15-08
The crowds at the local Sunn O))) shows seem to get bigger each tour. I got to the Knitting Factory around 10PM last night and the club was full to capacity.
The show was exactly as described - Greg and Stephen donned their robes just at 11PM and played The GrimmRobe Demos in its entirety. There were no breaks, no conversations - just 90 minutes of raw, uninhibited sounds.
The somewhat humerous exception to this was, toward the end of the set, somebody from the audience kept trying to climb onto the stage. SOMA pushed him back a few times and finally security came out. It was pretty amusing watching the security guard trying to glare at the guy who was at the front of the stage while Greg played on right beside him.The last night of this brief mini-tour was tonight in Philadelphia but I've heard that there will be a new album and tour next year. In terms of tour merchandise (which might go up on the Southern Lord site), the band was selling:
- The Grimmrobe Demos 3x Picture LP for $40 (it may have been $45)
- Dømkirke for $20 (didn't look close enough to see if they were selling color vinyl copies)
- The Grimmrobe Demos - 2x CD on Inoxia for $25

Sunn O))) Will Be Selling 3 LP Grimmrobe Picture Disc @ 10th Anniversary Shows
Stephen O'Malley posted that Sunn O))) will be selling a limited edition (500 copies) of a three LP picture disc of the Grimmrobe Demos on their upcoming 10th Anniversary Tour.
SOMA provided no description as to what is on the third disc. I've tried zooming in on the picture but it looks like the writing is reversed so it is hard to make anything out. Obviously, this will go quick and likely end up on eBay the same night of the show.
Sunn O))) are only playing four shows in the US for this mini-tour. Here are the tour dates:
10/10/2008 Safari Sam’s - Los Angeles, CA w/John Weise, more TBA

KTL (Stephen O'Malley + Peter Rehberg) Play the Knitting Factory on May 21st
KTL, which is a fairly new project from Stephen O'Malley (Sunn O))), Khanate, Burning Witch, etc.) and Peter Rehberg (Pita), is finally playing some US dates. I don't think SOMA has played many live dates in NYC since the demise of Khanate so it is great to see this show scheduled.
According to Wikipedia, KTL was "formed to create the music for a theatre production entitled Kindertotenlieder by Gisele Vienne & Dennis Cooper. The production was premiered in Brest, France in March 2007. " Aquarius Records describes the band's sound as "minimalist ambient music, electronic glitchology and Earthy guitar sludge [that] make a fine sipping brew."
KTL maintains a live archive where past shows can be downloaded. A good starting point for anyone wanting to check out KTL is either the 9-25-07 show in Japan or the 4-30-07 show in Austria.
Don't miss this rare appearance at the Knitting Factory...

New Music Releases This Week...
This week, there really aren't any interesting CDs advertised at the "big box" stores but there are a few indie releases that might be worth hunting down.
Prince - Planet Earth
With 2.9MM copies of the CD distributed free this past Sunday with the UK paper The Mail, copies will be turning up on eBay dirt-cheap. Wait a week or so and watch the price drop.
Meat Puppets - Rise To Your Knees
The Kirkwood brothers reunite after 11 years and the early reviews are great. This is on the indie label Anodyne Records
Sunn O))) - Oracle
The band had the eBayers going crazy by selling a tour-only CD of Oracle on their recent West Coast tour. Now on the Southern Lord site, the band is selling a limited edition (nach) LP of Oracle (see below).
The initially pressing of "Oracle" is 7,777 copies (2,000 on clear).
First 1000 orders of clear vinyl will also receive a Oracle poster with their album. Both versions are available via mailorder. As stated above all mailorder customers will receive a free "Oracle" cd (with rare misprinted cover!) with each order. Limit of 1 order of each color per customer. $17.77
(MAILORDER CUSTOMERS WILL RECEIVE A FREE SINGLE CD VERSION OF THE ALBUM!)

KTL (Stephen O'Malley & Peter "Pita" Rehberg) - Legal Music Download
Here is the Wikipedia entry for KTL:
KTL is a group consisting of Stephen O'Malley (SunnO)))) & Peter Rehberg (Pita), formed to create the music for a theatre production entitled Kindertotenlieder by Gisele Vienne & Dennis Cooper. The production was premiered in Brest, France in March 2007. The duo have also played other shows not associated with the Kindertotenlieder production.
The band played a small handful of shows earlier this year in Europe and seven shows (I would assume this is all the shows that KTL played) are avilable for download from the KTL Live Archive (link) and iTunes. Thus far I have listened to the May 31st show from Bristol and really enjoyed it. The music is similar to the output from bands like Throbbing Gristle and it is a bit less dark and "evil" than recent Sunn releases.
It seems that almost every band is filmed and clips are added to YouTube. Why should KTL be any exception?
Looking for the following upcoming releases from KTL:
THRILL 188 KTL 2 double gatefold vinyl (on Thrill Jockey)
RATHER 16 KTL 3 12" (on Or)

Aaron Dilloway (Wolf Eyes) Releases Limited Edition LP
I am a big fan of the indie DIY scene and used to be a big record collector. I admire bands like Boris, Sunn O))) and Wolf Eyes for releasing limited edition vinyl LPs. In the past, all of these bands seemed to press enough copies to keep the fans happy without getting stuck with unsold inventory. eBay seemed to change this all for Sunn and Boris (I have read that 8,000 copies were pressed of the recently released LP Altar) but Wolf Eyes and its members continue to plow ahead with ultra-limited edition releases.
Aaron Dilloway has just released a new LP, Concealed, that is limited to 300 copies. The LP is available from No Fun Productions for $15 (postpaid).
It goes without saying -- get it now or pay eBay prices!

Sunn O)))/Boris - Altar 3x LP On Sale Tomorrow or Friday
The triple record version of Sunn's latest release will be available for sale later this week.
As expected, there will be a mail order version which will likely be very limited (details on the number of copies has not been released). Given the current investment speculation in Sunn and Boris releases, I'd keep a close eye on the Southern Lord site as these LPs are going to go very quickly (and will turn up on eBay for double the retail price).
Here is what was posted to the Southern Lord blog:This is just a quick heads up that the sunn 0)))/Boris-Altar 3xLP will be on sale via the Southern Lord site by the end of the week (feb. 15th or 16th). This very special vinyl edition features completely over the top packaging that alot of time, care, love and $ went into. We hope you will find it worth the wait! It also features a bonus (3rd) Lp featuring the 28+min. epic track: “Her Lips Were Wet With Venom/(Satanoscillatemymetallicsonatas) featuring sunn and boris with Dylan Carslon (EARTH). Mailorder customers will be receiving the baby blue version. More pressing, pricing, packaging etc.. details will be available soon. Please check the Lord site for more info!
