Legal Music Downloads - TV on The Radio, Cold War Kids and Iggy (Pop) & The Stooges

I have been meaning to clear off my iPod and finally got around to listening to a number of the podcasts that I had downloaded.

TV On the Radio - Live PodcastThe first podcast is TV on the Radio live on AOL's The Interface. The band's set was recorded in November of last year (2006) and they sound great!! They play three songs live in the studio and really show how far they have matured in both musicianship and songwriting since their debut. The band also gives a short interview and, amusingly, David Sitek grumping about the leak of the Cookie Mountain demos sounds somewhat like the Lars Ulrich/Napster wars (see below).

Tracks played are "Wash the Day", "Young Liars" and "Province". This is well worth the download.

Cold War Kids Live on KEXPThe second podcast is The Cold War Kids live on KEXP's mid-morning show. As the only thing that I have previously heard by The Cold War Kids is Nathan Willet's solo set on The Interface, I don't have much of a point of comparison. I like the songs with the full band much better than Willet solo but, all-in-all, I don't hear what all the hype is about.

Iggy (Pop) and the Stooges - Live at SXSWThe last podcast is a twenty-minute set by Iggy & The Stooges recorded live at SXSW on March 16, 2007. This is a must for any Iggy fan as it features the reunited Stooges playing four cuts from The Weirdness. The tracks are "Trollin'", Interview with Iggy, "ATM", "My Idea of Fun" and "She Took My Money".

Dragons of Zynth - Brooklyn Museum, July 7, 2007

I read all the "hate" posts directed at this band after they opened for Television (in Central Park). I honestly don't get it -- I thought they were really good and I would make an effort to see them again. I would compare the band's sound to mid-period Sonic Youth and this may have been what turned off the Television crowd. The crowd this night really seemed to love the band.

Tunde Adebimpe, Lou Reed, Laurie Anderson are Guest Narrators for Brand Upon the Brain Live Tour

Brand Upon the BrainThis is one of those rare events that makes me love living in NYC. Brand Upon the Brain is Guy Maddin's new movie which will have a 7 night advance run here in New York. What makes this really cool is that the soundtrack will be performed live in the theatre each night with an 11-piece live orchestra, a 5-piece live Foley (sound effects) team a live celebrity narrator, and Castrato supplementing the filmic image to comprise a one-of-a-kind cinematic spectacle. Filmmaker Guy Maddin will also appear in person to present the film. Following the live tour, BRAND! will open in platform release as a regular film, with a pre-recorded soundtrack narrated by Isabella Rossellini.

Brand Upon the Brain! In which the shocking truth is finally revealed about young Guy Maddin and his hellish childhood on a remote island, under the hyper-watchful eye of a crazed mother hellbent on restoring her youth and a diabolically distant scientist-father, proprietors of a mom-and-pop orphanage they surreptitiously operate within the dank confines of the family lighthouse. Watch! as the sex instinct grabs hold of young Maddin and his sister! Thrill! as the Mysteries of the Light House are divined by teen detectives! Reel! at the headstrong invention and heart-stopping rhythms of the elder Maddin¹s heroic silent moviemaking!!
Here is the current list of guest narrators:
