Madball - "Rebellion" CD EP Review (Black N Blue)

> Growing up I knew too many bands that were desperate to be signed to a major label (to steal a phrase from Steve Albini - they were “anxious to be led around by their nose rings”) and, of the bands I knew, I can’t think of one that “broke out” and actually made any money. With too many people waiting for life to happen to them, I’ve admired Freddy Madball for years for making things happen on his own – Madball has been making music on their own terms for almost 25 years, Black N Blue Productions has put on high-quality shows for the last couple years and now Freddy has branched out by releasing the new Madball EP on his new label - The Black N Blue.

This new 6-track EP, “Rebellion”, follows in the same vein as 2010’s Empire and the only real change is that drummer Jay Weinberg has been replaced by Mike Justian (x-Red Chord). For this outing, Madball is working once again with producer Erik Rutan and the new EP features four new tracks along with re-recordings of “Get Out” and “It’s My Life”, both of which were originally recorded for Madball’s 1989 debut “Ball of Destruction”.

The disc starts with "You Reap What Yow Sow" which has everything that you would expect from this classic NYHC band. The track opens with Hoya's rumbling bass and follows this with some crushing downtuned guitar riffs and fast breaks. Freddy ferociously spits out lyrics about someone who has never changed and never grew up, trading off call-and-response vocals on the chorus.

The other three new tracks follow in a similar vein. "The Beast" is about wrestling with anxiety attacks ("a beast I can't control"). Hoya's rumbling bass is again featured on "Rebellion" along with a killer mid-song breakdown and this song seems to be about standing up and taking charge. The last new song, "My Blood", is an anthemic riff-driven tribute to Freddy's son.

The two re-recorded songs, "Get Out" and "It's My Life", retain the fury of the original versions but sound immensely better. While some of this sonic improvement can be credited to producer Erik Rutan, one also has to keep in mind that Freddy has come a long way since 1989. Freddy was 12 at the time of the original recording and "Ball of Destruction" recorded in DIY fashion, live to two-track.

Gorilla Biscuits and CIV Added to Black N Blue Bowl @ Studio B, April 5th

I have been procrastinating getting tickets for this show but this recent announcement will get me moving. Black N Blue Productions have comfirmed that both Gorilla Biscuits and CIV will be playing the show next Saturday. I don't think Gorilla Biscuits have played in NYC since their 2006 shows at CBGB and BB Kings and CIV broke up in 2000. The lineup includes Agnostic Front, Madball, Terror, Breakdown (reunion), and Fahrenheit 451.

Tickets are $25 in advance and $30 at the door.

Madball Plays Show on Staten Island on May 4th

I hate having to get in the car to drive to a show but Madball is one of those few bands that could get me to drive into Staten Island. Since CBGB and L'Amour closed, I think the closest Madball has played is Long Island.

Subhoodz Release No Regrets CD on April 17th

I got into Subhoodz in the late 90's but the band has been pretty quiet for the last few years. Tomorrow, the band releases a killer compilation covering their 16 year career as a band. This CD contains material from This Boy's Life and the Genuine B-Boyz CDs and some remixes and new material. The band is supposed to be hitting the road soon for a tour and a CD of new material will follow later in the year.

Stress calls Subhoodz' music "Hip-Hop for the Hardcore at Heart". For fans of old-school metal/hip-hop fusion (think Biohazard, Crown of Thornz, 25 Ta Life and Skarhead), this CD is a must-have.

Freddy Madball to Play First Solo Show In London

Freddy Madball will be performing his solo/hip hop project on January 11th,at the Scala in London. This will be his debut show! He has been invited to open up for underground hip hop artist NECRO, on his first visit to the UK.

Hazen Street Live @ Knitting Factory, NYC Dec. 16, 2006

Hazen Street returned to NYC for their first show in two years. I missed seeing the band when they played last so I really didn't know what to expect. These guys are incredible live and really know how to put on a great show. Vocalists, Freddy Madball and Toby Morse are both longtime veterans of the scene and know how to work both the stage and the crowd. They were also able to pull off vocals harmonies and interplay that I haven't heard since the early days of Biohazard. The rhythm section is also top notch with Mackie Jayson (x-Cro-Mags, Bad Brains) on drums, Hoya (from Madball) on bass, David Kennedy (from Boxcar Racer) on guitar and Todd Morse (from H2O) on second guitar stepping in for the departed Chad Gilbert.
Freddy brought up Vinny Stigma (who is in the picture below with Freddy) who unfortunately did not play with the band but the surprise of the evening was a two song encore by H2O. Unfortunately, I had stepped to the back of the room when Hazen Street went off so I didn't get a decent pictures of H2O.
