Red Fang Releases Animated Video for "Crows in Swine" / Show at Terminal 5 on Dec. 18th with Opeth and In Flames

Red Fang Releases Animated Video for "Crows in Swine" / Show at Terminal 5 on Dec. 18th with Opeth and In Flames
Last week, Red Fang premiered their new video for “Crows In Swine,” the third single off the Portland-based rock group’s critically acclaimed third album Whales and Leeches (Relapse).

For this new animated video, Red Fang was looking to move away from doing the same type of clips they’ve been known for in the past and create something different this time around. For the “Crows In Swine” video, the group teamed with renowned animator Adam Avilla to direct. Adam came up with the barbarian concept and each band member came up with their own secret weapons for the clip.

“I am blown away by the video Adam made for us,” says Red Fang guitarist/vocalist Bryan Giles. “It's brutally cute. I wish I was as cool as the character I am in it in real life. Recliners, sausage, guitars and kittens!!

Red Fang also announced they’ll join the “Communion of Sirens” tour with Opeth and In Flames and the tour will kick off December 3 in Chicago. The local tour stop is at Terminal 5 on Dec. 18th. Tickets are $35 and doors are at 6:30PM.

Repulsion - Live Photos and Video from Maryland Deathfest 5/24/13 (Relapse Records)

There were a lot of familiar faces at Maryland Deathfest (MDF) 2013, both on the stage and off. I wasn't able to take off work to make it to the first night of Deathfest so I started the weekend festivities on Friday afternoon with Repulsion. Repulsion didn't sound much different from when they were in town last September for The Power of the Riff East festival but, this time out, the band played as a three-piece as guitarist Marissa Martinez was notably absent.

Repulsion - Live Photos and Video from Maryland Deathfest 5/24/13 (Relapse Records)

The set list included twelve of the eighteen tracks from Horrified, along with a cover of Venom's "Schizo".

Repulsion - 'Horrified' MDF Grey Vinyl EditionI broke down and bought one of the "limited edition MDF Gray version of 'Horrified' - limited to 100 copies and available only at the fest!" but imagine that this is going to sit unopened on the shelf as Relapse's 2CD edition of Horrified has long been on my iPhone. I respect the band wanting to preserve their legacy but I keep wishing they would put out something new. In an interview last year with BrooklynVegan, Scott Carlson said "If the material and motivation ever come together I think we could do something that would not tarnish our name. So yes, we have weakened our stance on the subject a little bit. However, we have nothing planned. One never knows....".

Repulsion - Live Photos and Video from Maryland Deathfest 5/24/13 (Relapse Records)

I love the diversity at MDF as there was a fresh-faced lad beside me during Repulsion's set, right outside of the pit who seemed to alternate between pumping his fist in the air and making out with his girlfriend. I don't think I've ever seen anyone make out to Repulsion (...and most of the women that I've known would probably have hit me if I tried using grindcore as 'mood music'.) Ah well - different strokes....

Repulsion - Live Photos and Video from Power of the Riff Festival East, Warsaw, Brooklyn, NY 9-2-12

"Repulsion were an early grindcore / death metal band from Flint, Michigan. Their innovations were significant to the development of the death metal and grindcore genres...By 1986 Repulsion's trademark style had matured; characterised by raspy shouted vocals, extremely distorted down-tuned guitars, overdriven punkish riffs, absurd rambling solos interjected as if only as an afterthought, rumbling bass lines, and machine-gun drumming. Repulsion was experimenting with a hammering, static clouded, lo-fi sound that was on a level of extreme that had been touched on by few bands before. To complement the band's sound they penned gruesome lyrics; focusing on fantastic apocalyptic themes ranging from zombie epidemics to nuclear war."

I don't think Repulsion has done a national tour in a few years so it was a real treat to see the band at the Power of the Riff East Festival. In a pre-show interview with BrooklynVegan, Scott Carlson said "We don't want to play too much. The shows have to feel special for us. So, our acceptance of a gig offer is based as much on where it is, who's playing and who's paying rather than how much they're paying. I don't have the stamina for gigs that are just death metal for 12 hours. Events like Power of the Riff are very carefully curated and the acts are chose for other reasons than just 'well, this shit fits together'."

Repulsion were probably my favorite band of the night. Greg Anderson also seemed to share my opinion as I got a big kick out of watching him come out from between the speaker columns during the later half of Repulsion's set - clearly having fun banging his head to Repulsion's last few songs.

Repulsion is back in the area on January 19, 2013 for Decibel Magazine's "100th Issue Celebration Show" at Union Transfer in Philadelphia. Pig Destroyer, Municipal Waste, Tombs and Evoken are also on the bill for this show. Repulsion is also playing Maryland Deathfest XI (along with Carcass) on May 23, 2013.

Rumpelstiltskin Grinder (Relapse), Hull (The End) and Ravage (Metal Blade) are Playing A Free Show Tomorrow at Lit Lounge

Rumpelstiltskin Grinder, Hull and Ravage Play Free Show at Lit Lounge on May 4thTones of Death.com (metal ringtones) and Precious Metal are putting on a pretty big free show tomorrow night at Lit Lounge.

I've been wanting to check out local boys Hull for quite some time. Hull got some great press for their SXSW shows and their first full-length disc, Sole Lord, is coming out May 26th on The End Records. Metal Maniacs described Hull as having "all the crush of early Mastodon met with the ambient fire of Neurosis, but somehow [Hull] avoids sounding like either one of them."

Boston metallers Ravage are also on the bill. I haven't heard the band play live but all the write-ups on the band cite the strong NWOBHM and thrash influence in their music. The band just signed to Metal Blade and their new disc The End of Tomorrow will be out this summer.

Ravage - "Night Crawler" (Judas Priest cover)

Last (but not least) is Philadelphia's "most extreme criminal thrash quintet" Rumpelstiltskin Grinder. RsG released their second full-length studio disc, Living for Death, Destroying the Rest, on Relapse Records earlier this year. Rumpelstiltskin Grinder are playing a few area shows before heading out on the road with Candlelight Records' bands Absu and SoThis next month.

Kingdom of Sorrow Play Knitting Factory / Jamey Jasta Schedules In-Store at Vintage Vinyl

Jamey Jasta's new project, Kingdom of Sorrow, which includes Kirk Windstein and Steve Gibb from Crowbar, is playing the Knitting Factory on March 2nd. It doesn't look like tickets for the show have gone up yet but I bet this one will sell out quickly. Kingdom of Sorrow has their debut CD coming out on Relapse Records and the tracks streaming on their MySpace page sound great. The new CD drops on February 19th.

In support of the new CD, Jamey Jasta is doing an in-store signing at Vintage Vinyl (Fords, NJ) on Wednesday, February 20th @ 7PM.

Unearthly Trance Debuts New Video on SingingFool.com

Unearthly Trance just debuted the first video, Permanent Ice, from their latest CD, on SingingFool.com (link).

The band has two shows scheduled in town next month and then they are off on a European tour with Ramesses (ex-Electric Wizard). The July 7th appearance is part of a major Unsound show (see previous post)

July 07: Pussycat Lounge (bands include Whitehorse, Ocean, Angel of Decay)
July 25: Luna Lounge (bands include Pelican, Priestbird)

I have heard great things about the band's live show so I'd like to check out both performances.

TroublemanUnlimited still has copies for sale of the band's out of print pre-Relapse releases (a 7", 10" and cassette) [link]. Unearthly Trance has the potential to become huge so I would recommend picking up these early releases before you have to pay eBay prices.

Made Out of Babies and Unearthly Trance Play Club Midway on Monday, April 16th

I almost didn't notice this show which I would have regretted as it looks like a great lineup of bands.

TimeOut's advance preview says "Made Out of Babies takes NYC rock back to the sewer where it belongs. Singer Julie Xmas goes from girl-child to Cookie Monster with a pervasive f*cked-up-ness that's only amplified by the rhyth, section's chthonic rumble and the guitarist's theatening riffage."

Opening acts Unearthly Trance, Minsk and Rwake are all on Relapse so that should say something for their sound.

Here are the details about the show...

Unearthly Trance Playing Water Street Lounge Tonight (March 2nd)

Wow, I got the date of this show wrong. I was thinking it was tomorrow night.

If anyone is looking for something to do tonight, this should be a great show. Unearthly Trance just released their debut on Relapse and Constant played some strong shows when they came through the area in '05 (and I don't think they have been back since).

Here is the complete lineup for tonight's show:

8:30 - So Is The Tongue
The epic orchestrations of this progressive three piece from central New Jersey range from swirling psychedelia to fits of heavy doom laden cacophony.

9:30 – Chubby Behemoth
This New York progressive Jazz ensemble will take your preconceived notions of Jazz and grind them to a pulp.

10:30 – Constants
One of Boston’s best-kept secrets brings their forward thinking “space rock” to Brooklyn, to drown you in the most beautiful sea of sound.

11:30 – Unearthly Trance
The Trident, Unearthly Trance’s recent debut for Relapse Records is a tightly wrapped package of blackened doom and thrash. New York is still in the forefront of churning out the most exciting and fresh sounds from the underground.

Unsane @ Knitting Factory, NYC Jan. 24, 2007

It doesn't get much better than a double-bill of Unsane and The Dwarves. Unsane @ Knitting Factory, Jan. 24, 2007
Both bands looked great @ the Knitting Factory on Wednesday night. It is great to see Unsane back in action and playing around town again. Unsane has a new CD, Visqueen, due out on Ipecac on March 13, 2007.

Car Bomb - Centralia CD Review

Car BombCar Bomb's first full-length CD, Centralia, is set for release on Feb. 6th. I have had this CD for about a week now and have been playing the hell out of it. This CD clocks in just under 40 minutes and the band really showcase their abilities across the disc's 11 tracks. Stellar production highlight all of the band members contributions but it is Elliot Hoffman's jazz-influenced drumming and Greg Kubacki's intricate guitar work that really caught my ear.

This is a great metal CD that compares well with a lot of the Relapse releases. The band has a lot of diversity that goes beyond traditional metal/hardcore as the band is able to channel a variety of influences in their songwriting (ranging from straight-forward hardcore to math-metal to jazz). Tempos and song structures change up throughout the disc and the whole thing works. There isn't a bad cut on this disc.

For anyone unfamiliar with the band, the first video from this CD M^6 showcases the band's strengths and is a good indication what the rest of this CD sounds like.

Car Bomb is playing the Precious Metal show at the Lit Lounge in NYC on Feb. 19th.
